Director Jim Steel’s orgy featuring no-longer-in-the-industry vets B.J. Slater, Vic Hall, Chad Conners and David Cline, as well as the late Christian Fox, transfers great to the digital format. The DVD is loaded with extras - a word of warning to gay users, however: Side B of the DVD is all straight previews, straight slideshows and clips. Now, for lovers of both sexes, this won’t be a problem.
However, it is very odd that a DVD aimed primarily at gay viewers has so much hetero stuff included. To be fair, there are some gay extras included - but they pale by comparison to either the obvious attempt at pushing the straight line or the laziness of the company by stamping the same material on each disc. With the wealth of gay Vivid product on the market (they were one of the leading gay companies in the early ’90s), it shouldn’t be too difficult to find enough material to put on a disc. Michael Zen’s bizarre fantasy centering around beautiful Kurt Young and his quest to find long lost love Steve Cannon is filled with terrific imagery and some great sex. There are some fine performances, notably Young’s and Derrick Bishop’s as the freakish head doctor of an "asylum" that Young is thrown in. Jack Simmons is also good as a transvestite.
The video is loaded with extras filling Sides A and B. However, Side B is crammed to overflowing with straight video product only: photo galleries, slideshows, pussy galore. Throwing straight material onto a gay DVD is like the NRA soliciting donations from members of Greenpeace. Vivid has a sizable library of gay titles, and there’s no reason why the same Side B framework can’t be filled with more appropriate content. Side A does have some extra gay stuff, but not nearly as much as it could.
